If you don’t have breakdown cover, it may be well worthy of your consideration. You can easily compare breakdown cover online, and if you ever need roadside assistance, you’ll be glad you have it!
Here are 5 tips to help you prevent breakdowns this winter:
- Check tyre pressure in all tyres including the spare. Also check tread depth, which should be 1.6 mm at a minimum.
- Check that your battery’s connections are tight and free of corrosion. If your battery is more than 3 years old, consider having a professional check how well it holds a charge.
- Check your wipers. Look closely at front and rear wiper blades for signs of splitting or wear and make sure your screen wash is of the right concentration to prevent freeze-ups.
- Remove ice and snow from your car’s lights and windows before setting out. Never just cut a small hole through the ice on the windscreen. It is illegal and very dangerous. Also de-mist windows before commencing your journey.
- Check your fuel gauge. Ensure you have enough fuel for your journey and keep in mind that you’ll use more petrol when you drive in heavy traffic or in stop-start driving conditions.
Also, if the weather is treacherous and you don’t have to go anywhere, consider staying in and sparing yourself the stress of worrying about a breakdown.
