I love learning new languages and always make an effort to speak the local language whenever I go abroad. It’s an important part of my holiday and without making the effort to speak to the locals in their native language, I might as well go to Bournemouth and be done with it.
Thankfully, because of my passion for language I can get by in four languages without much hassle and find it easy to learn new phrases when I go abroad, especially the important ones!
However, in all honesty, I don’t know how to say ‘Do you accept credit cards?’ in that many languages and it’s something that I’m going to be using more frequently on my travels when I take my prepaid card instead of cash for extra security (prepaid cards aren’t strictly credit cards but the term ‘credit cards’ is generally used to describe all types of plastic payment). Because of this, I thought I would do all the leg work for you and show you how to ask if credit cards are accepted in five different languages:
Spanish (my personal favourite and the only one I’m anywhere near fluent in – best not get this one wrong!)
¿Acepta tarjetas de crédito?
(You say it like this: Ak-sep-ta tar-eh-tas dee cre-dito)
French
Acceptez-vous les cartes de credit?
Italian
Accettate carte di credito?
Portuguese
Aceitam cartões de crédito?
Turkish
Kredi kart? Kabul ediyor musunuz?
