Back in October we published a blog stressing the importance of adequate home insurance over the festive season.

Because there’s much to remember at this time of year, and there’s less than a month left until Christmas, we wanted to remind you to check that you have enough home insurance cover to protect you over the festive season.

Here’s our quick guide to checking you are fully covered:

  1. Find out how much contents cover you currently have.
  2. Work out how much contents cover you currently need (excluding Christmas purchases).  If you don’t currently have enough, write down how much extra cover you need.
  3. Look at your home insurance policy and see if you get free additional cover over the Christmas period. Most policies come with an additional 10% cover for a set period of time before and after Christmas. If your policy doesn’t come with this cover, estimate the value of any Christmas purchases you are likely to bring into the household and write down the amount of Christmas cover needed.

  4. Take the figures you have written down and add them together. Once you have done this, ring your home insurance provider and arrange for the cover amount from step 2 to be permanently implemented as soon as possible and review your cover regularly from then on.

Also, ask how much it would cost to temporarily increase your contents cover by the amount noted down in step 4 so that you are adequately covered for the Christmas period. If your provider can’t do this for you it may be worth increasing your standard cover a little more in case thieves, fire or flood tries to ruin your Christmas. Although these events would be devastating in themselves you should receive some comfort from the thought that they haven’t hurt your wallet too.
